Let me play Devil's advocate here....
I will use the USA for the example because it is the system in which I work in(Like it or not).
So a director lands a mid range studio gig. He/She is going to get paid and by our standards paid well. We will say 5,000,000USD. Looks good at first doesn't it?? Now half of that will go to the greedy US government in taxes right away. So he/she now has 2.5 left--Hey still doing pretty well for a years work. But one has to remember that the director may not have another gig to follow for a few years we will say 5 years. That leaves them 500,000USD a year. Which one may still think is very good money until you start to examine what people make in other fields. Or how that money may be spent--Hell, you could spend everything from one picture just to buy a modest house in LA.
What does Richard Branson make a year in interest alone?? Or and Engineer for Ford Motor?? Big-Business is where the cash is to be made.
When I was at NYU--Yes I am a film school graduate. I had a teacher tell me something that I think is dead on. He said "No one gets rich making movies." You get rich selling them....
Sure there are Spielberg, Howard, Lucas....But for everyone of them there are thousands trying to make ends meet. It's the same in the music industry....How many people do you know in a band?? Are they making what Sir Mick or Sir Paul are making??
Just some thoughts.
Good Luck
